Some people pull a face when they hear the word veneer. They think it is the cheap, flimsy rubbish you find in flat-pack boxes from those big blue warehouses. It isn’t. A proper veneer is just a thin slice of real oak bonded onto a stable core. It is real wood. It feels like wood. It smells like wood. Because it is wood.

The thing is, solid wood is temperamental. It breathes. It moves. You put a solid oak table next to a roaring radiator in mid-winter and you might hear it crack as it dries out. How do I clean my oak furniture? Just use a soft, damp cloth. Not wet, just damp. Wipe it down and then dry it off immediately with a clean rag. Stay away from those “multi-surface” sprays in the supermarket. They just gunk up the finish over time.

Does the wood colour change over time? Yes. All real wood does. It is a natural product. It will usually mellow and darken a bit as it sits in the sunlight. If you leave a vase in the same spot for three years, you will have a pale circle when you move it. Move your bits and bobs around occasionally.

Is the furniture heavy? It is wood, so it is not exactly a feather. It has got some heft to it. But compared to solid planks, it is much easier to get up a flight of stairs without calling in three neighbours to help.

Can I fix a scratch? Small surface scratches can often be hidden with a wax repair stick that matches the colour. If you’ve taken a massive chunk out of it with a hammer, you’re probably out of luck. Treat it with a bit of respect and it’ll be fine.

Why does the grain look different on different pieces? Because trees aren’t made in a factory. Every slice of wood has its own knots and swirls. That is the point of buying wood in the first place. If you want everything to look identical, go buy something plastic.
