How to Choose the Right Chest of Drawers
Start by measuring the wall or alcove where the chest will go. Allow enough room to open drawers fully and walk past comfortably, and check that the chest does not block wardrobe doors, windows or radiators. In smaller bedrooms, a tall narrow chest (often called a tallboy) can give you a lot of storage without taking up much floor space.
Think about width and height. As a general guide, narrow chests around 60–80 cm wide work well in tight spaces, guest rooms and children’s bedrooms. Mid-width chests between 80 cm and 110 cm suit most standard bedrooms, while wider designs above 110 cm provide extra surface area for lamps, photographs and decorative items. Keep the height in proportion to your other furniture—very tall chests can dominate a small room, while low, wide chests can help balance high wardrobes and bed frames.
Consider drawer layout and storage. If you mostly fold clothes, a chest with four or more drawers gives you plenty of room for t-shirts, jumpers, underwear and accessories. Shallower top drawers are useful for smaller items, while deeper lower drawers work well for bulkier clothing and bedding. Some customers also use chests of drawers in living rooms, hallways or dining rooms for general storage, not just bedroom use.
Choose a finish that works with your bedroom. Natural oak, light oak and rustic oak bring warmth and visible grain, while painted finishes in white, grey or cream can help a small room feel brighter. Many customers pair an oak chest of drawers with a painted bed or bedside tables, or vice versa, to create a relaxed, layered look rather than a perfectly matched set.
Check the product specifications before you buy. Each item in this collection shows external dimensions, drawer sizes, material details and assembly information, so you can see exactly what you are getting and how it will fit in your room. If you are buying other bedroom furniture at the same time, compare finishes, leg styles and handle details so your chest of drawers works well with your bed, wardrobes and bedsidess.
Many of our chests of drawers are delivered fully assembled, so there is no flat-pack build—simply position your new chest, level it if needed and start using it straight away. Delivery options and assembly details are shown on each individual product page, along with any guarantee information.
Chest of Drawers FAQs
What size chest of drawers should I choose?
For small bedrooms or narrow walls, a tall narrow chest around 60–80 cm wide is often ideal. In medium to large bedrooms, widths between 80 cm and 120 cm give more storage and a larger top surface without feeling cramped. Always measure your available space and allow room for drawers to open fully and for you to walk past comfortably.
How many drawers do I need?
It depends on how much you need to store and how you fold your clothes. A 3- or 4-drawer chest is often enough for one person’s folded clothing in a smaller room, while 5-, 6- or 7-drawer chests provide more capacity for couples or larger wardrobes. Consider mixing shallow and deep drawers to accommodate different types of clothing and accessories.
Can a chest of drawers be used in other rooms?
Yes. Chests of drawers are commonly used in living rooms, hallways, dining rooms and home offices as well as bedrooms. In a living room they can store games, paperwork and media accessories; in a hallway they are useful for shoes, bags and everyday items; in a dining room they can hold table linens, cutlery and serving pieces.
Should a chest of drawers match the bed and wardrobes?
Matching furniture creates a coordinated look, but it is not essential. Many customers prefer to mix finishes—for example, an oak chest of drawers with a painted bed and bedside tables, or a painted chest with oak wardrobes. Focus first on proportions and storage, then choose finishes that complement your walls, flooring and other furniture.
Are these chests of drawers delivered assembled?
Many items in this collection are delivered fully assembled so you can start using them straight away. Some larger pieces may have removable tops, legs or mirrors for safe transport. Each product page clearly explains whether assembly is required and what you can expect on delivery.
