Choosing a TV unit that actually lasts for your living room furniture.
I’ve spent more years than I care to admit in a workshop covered in sawdust. I’ve seen every kind of furniture trend come and go. Most of it is rubbish. People come to me after buying some flat-pack monstrosity that wobbled the moment they put a remote on it, asking if I can fix it. I can’t. You can’t fix cardboard. If you want something that survives a busy house, kids, and the occasional knock, you buy solid wood. It’s heavy. It’s a bit of a pain to move. But it stays where you put it and it doesn’t fall apart.
Most living rooms I walk into look like a bomb went off. Wires everywhere, controllers lost in the sofa, and a telly perched on something that looks like it’s about to give up the ghost. A proper TV Unit isn’t just a shelf for your screen. It’s about stopping the clutter from driving you mad. If you’ve got a PlayStation, a Sky box, and three different remotes, you need a place to put them that isn’t the floor.

Wooden TV Units & Solid Wood TV Stands, TV Cabinets (31)
Tv Cabinet & Storage Solutions for large tv and display units
Picking the right size is where most people mess up. I’ve seen it a hundred times. Someone buys a massive 55-inch screen and tries to stick it on a tiny little stand. It looks ridiculous. Like a man wearing a hat three sizes too small. You want the unit to be wider than the screen. It balances the room and stops the whole thing looking top-heavy. If you’ve gone for a 55 inch tv stand, make sure the unit has a bit of breathing room on either side. It’s safer, too. Less chance of someone clipping the corner of the telly when they walk past.
Style and float Tv stand with room design and storage space
You’ve got two real choices: a stand or a cabinet. A stand is open. It’s fine if you’re one of those people who keeps everything perfectly tidy, but most of us aren’t. I prefer a cabinet. You can shove all the messy bits, the spare cables, and the instruction manuals you’ll never read behind a solid door and forget they exist. It makes the room look sorted in about five seconds. If you’re really struggling with a weird room layout, Corner TV units are the only sensible way to go. They tuck into the dead space and don’t eat up the middle of your floor.
Media Unit & Stylish design, sleek and elegant for a piece of furniture
Let’s talk about the wood. I only work with Solid Wood TV Unit designs because anything else is a waste of your money. Oak is tough. It’s got a grain that actually looks like something. If you buy a cheap one made of compressed bits of old crates, it’ll peel the first time you spill a drink on it. Real oak takes a beating. If the kids scratch it, you can usually buff it out. Try doing that with plastic. You might also want to think about height. I’ve written before about Extra Tall TV Cabinets: Are They the Best Choice? because sometimes you want the screen at eye level when you’re tucked up in bed or sitting at a high table.
The wires are the worst part. They collect dust like nothing else and look a mess. I always look for units with pre-drilled holes in the back. It’s a simple thing, but it saves you a lot of grief. You thread the cables through, and suddenly you can actually see your carpet again. My wife used to moan about the “spaghetti junction” behind our old telly until I brought home a proper Solid Oak cabinet from the shop. Now, it’s all hidden.
Look, Oak Castle Furniture isn’t about selling you something that you’ll need to replace in two years. It’s about buying it once. It’s an investment. It’s heavy, it’s sturdy, and it’ll probably outlast the telly you put on it. If you’re looking for something for a really big screen, you might want to check out my thoughts on TV Stands for 85 Inch TVs because at that size, the weight is no joke.

Common Questions About TV Units
Can I put a heavy TV on a solid oak stand? Yes. Oak is incredibly dense. Unlike cheap boards that bow in the middle over time, solid oak is designed to carry the weight of modern screens and all the equipment you shove inside the cupboards.
How do I look after the wood? Don’t overcomplicate it. Use a dry, soft cloth for dusting. Every six months or so, give it a light polish with a good quality wax. Keep it away from direct radiators or it might dry out too much.
Do I have to build it myself? No. Most of our range comes fully built. I don’t trust customers with Allen keys and I certainly don’t trust the flimsy joints you get in flat-pack kits. We build them properly in the workshop so they’re ready to use.
Will my remote work through the cupboard doors? If the doors are solid oak, no. You’ll need to leave the door ajar when in use or look for a unit with open shelving for your infrared boxes. Some people use “magic eye” extenders, but that’s more wires to deal with.
What if I move house? Get some help. These aren’t the lightweight units you buy at the supermarket. They are heavy because they are real. Use a two-person lift or you’ll put your back out.
