The reality of owning solid oak furniture: What I’ve learned in the workshop

Look, I’ve spent twenty years covered in sawdust. I’ve seen every trend come and go. People come in wanting something stunning but they don’t want to lift it. If you’re after something lightweight that you can throw away in three years, you’re in the wrong place. This stuff is proper solid oak. It’s heavy. It’ll probably give you a backache if you try to move it on your own. But it’s honest. It’s the kind of gear that survives three kids and a dog without falling to bits.

People ask me if it scratches. Of course it does. It’s wood, not a piece of granite. But that’s the point. Every mark tells a story of a Sunday roast or a kid’s homework session. If you want it to stay pristine, you’ll need to read up on Oak Sideboard Care: Protecting Your Investment. I usually tell my mates to just wax it once in a while and stop worrying. We build these things at Oak Castle Furniture to be kid-proof. Not because they’re indestructible, but because they’re repairable. You can’t sand down a cheap bit of flat-pack once the laminate peels. With solid oak, you just give it a bit of a rub down and it’s sorted.

If you’re trying to fit one of these into a flat, check out Small Space Living: Maximizing an Oak Sideboard. Need something for the hall? Choosing the Perfect Oak Sideboard for Your Entryway might help. Just remember they come out of the box ready to go. No tiny Allen keys or confusing diagrams here. It’s Bedroom Furniture that’ll outlast your house if you treat it right. If you’re still undecided, have a look at our Buying an Oak Sideboard: Shopping Guide.

Look, if you want something that looks new forever, buy plastic. This is wood. It’s got knots. It’s got grain. It’s got character. It’s not for everyone, but for people who want to buy something once and never think about it again, it’s the only way to go. You might need a hand getting it through the door, though. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

“The sideboard arrived and I nearly did my back in moving it, but it’s proper quality. My toddler already hit it with a toy car and you can’t even tell. Beats the cheap stuff hands down.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it actually solid wood all the way through? Yes. I don’t deal with bits of paper or shavings glued together. It’s solid timber from the top to the legs. It makes it heavy, but it also makes it last.

Does it come flat-packed? Most of our Sideboards and Chest of Drawers come fully assembled. I hate those little Allen keys as much as you do. Always check the specs though.

Will the wood change colour over time? Oak is a natural material. It mellows. If you put it in direct sunlight, it’ll lighten up a bit over the years. That’s just what real wood does.

Is it hard to look after? Not really. Keep it away from radiators so it doesn’t dry out too fast. Give it a bit of wax once or twice a year. It’s not rocket science.

What happens if I scratch it? You fix it. That’s the beauty of it. A bit of fine sandpaper and some fresh oil and the mark is gone. You can’t do that with the cheap stuff.
