Why the Corona Sideboard is a Sensible Choice for Messy Homes

I have spent the better part of my life in a workshop covered in sawdust, so I have a fairly low tolerance for furniture that is all style and no substance. Most people come to me looking for Solid Oak, and while that is the gold standard, not everyone has the budget or the lifestyle for it. If you have kids who treat the living room like a Wembley pitch, you might want to look at a Corona Sideboard. It is Mexican Pine, which is a different beast entirely. It is not trying to be a light oak sideboard. It is honest, chunky, and meant to be used.

The first thing you will notice about mexican pine furniture is that it usually comes with a “distressed” finish. That is just a fancy way of saying it already has a few marks and nicks in it. I love this. It means when your toddler decides to bash a toy car into the leg, or you accidentally catch the corner with a vacuum cleaner, it does not ruin the piece. It just adds to the story. If you want something that looks like it belongs in a sterile lab, buy plastic. This is wood. It has knots, it has grain, and it has character.

When it comes to Sideboards, storage is the only thing that actually matters. I have seen people try to cram an entire Sunday dinner’s worth of serving plates into tiny decorative cabinets. It never works. A mexican pine sideboard is a proper workhorse. Whether you go for a 100cm wide sideboard for a tight hallway or a massive 150cm sideboard for the dining room, you are getting deep drawers and solid cupboards. It is perfect for hiding away all those bits and bobs that usually clutter up the place. If you are struggling with where to put it, I actually wrote a bit about Choosing the Perfect Oak Sideboard for Your Entryway, and many of the same rules apply to pine. Measure twice, buy once.

Maintenance is straightforward. Most of these pieces are finished as Wax Pine Furniture. This gives it a dull, warm glow rather than a plastic-looking shine. If it starts looking a bit tired after a few years of family life, you just rub a bit of fresh wax into it and it is sorted. It is much easier than trying to repair a chip in a painted unit or a cheap laminate. Plus, it smells like a proper workshop, which I happen to think is a bonus.

Is it heavy? Yes. Will it scratch if you drag a set of keys across it? Probably. But it is solid. It is the kind of furniture you buy because you are tired of things falling apart. It is about value for money. You are getting real timber that will still be standing in a decade. If you are looking to kit out the rest of the house, I usually tell people to check out Oak Living Room Furniture for the main pieces, but for a high-traffic area where things get messy, pine is a very smart move.

“I was worried it would look a bit too ‘rustic’ but it actually fits in great. It’s solid as a rock and fits all the board games and mess that usually sits on the floor. Proper bit of kit for the price.”

Common Questions

Does the wax finish rub off on clothes? No, once it is buffed in at the factory, it is set. If you apply a fresh coat yourself at home, just give it twenty minutes to soak in and a good rub with a lint-free cloth. It will be fine.

Is it actually solid wood? Yes. Unlike the cheap stuff you find in big-box retailers, this is real timber. That is why it is heavy. If you knock it, it sounds solid, not hollow.

Can I paint it? You can, but you would need to strip the wax off first with some wire wool and white spirit. Personally, I think it looks better as it is, but if you want to know more about that, check out Oak Sideboard Makeover: Painting, Staining, and Distressing.

How do I stop the drawers from sticking? Because it is real wood, it can expand a bit if your house is very damp. A bit of candle wax or an old bar of soap rubbed on the drawer runners usually does the trick.

Will it fit in a small car? Probably not. These things are bulky even when they are flat. Do yourself a favour and get it delivered. It saves your back and your car’s upholstery.
