Why a 150cm Sideboard is Probably All You Need
I’ve spent more time in this workshop than I have in my own living room. I’ve seen every trend come and go. People used to want massive dressers that took up half a wall. Now, everyone is obsessed with “minimalism.” The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. That is why a 150cm sideboard is the most practical bit of kit you can put in a house. It is big enough to actually hold your Sunday best plates and all those bits and bobs you don’t want the neighbours seeing, but it won’t make your dining room feel like a storage locker.

Look, I’ll be honest. This stuff is Solid Oak. That means it’s heavy. If you’re planning on moving it every week to hoover underneath, you’re going to get a sore back. But that weight is exactly why it lasts. My lot at Oak Castle Furniture don’t build things to be light; we build them to be kid-proof. If your toddler runs into this with a toy car, the car is going to lose.
If you’re tight on space, you might be tempted by something smaller, but a 150cm wide sideboard gives you that extra drawer for the stuff that usually ends up on the kitchen counter. It’s a decent size. Not too flashy, just solid. If you are still figuring out the layout, I wrote a bit on Choosing the Perfect Oak Sideboard for Your Entryway which might help you avoid a headache.
People always ask me about the finish. It’s wood. It’s going to have grain patterns that don’t match up like a printed plastic sticker. That’s the point. If you want something that looks like it came off a factory line in a thousand identical pieces, go to a big-box blue and yellow shop. If you want an Oak Sideboard that actually has some soul, you’re in the right place.
I’ve seen plenty of people try to save a few quid on cheap alternatives. They usually end up calling me a year later because the hinges have sagged or the top has bowed under the weight of a lamp. Save yourself the faff. Buy it once, get it in the house, and forget about it for twenty years. If you’re worried about keeping it looking decent, have a read of our guide on Oak Sideboard Care. It’s not hard—just don’t leave soaking wet mugs on it.
We have plenty of Sideboards in the range, but the 150cm wide sideboard is the one I usually recommend to my own mates. It just works.
“Took two of us to get it into the lounge because it’s proper solid wood, not that flimsy stuff. It’s already survived my two Labradors and a housewarming party. Glad I spent the extra bit for something that won’t fall apart.”
Oak vs The Cheap Stuff
| Feature | Solid Oak (Our Way) | Flat-pack / Cheap Wood |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | Lasts decades. Can be sanded back. | Lasts 2-3 years if you’re lucky. |
| Maintenance | Bit of wax now and then. Sorted. | Once it peels, it’s for the bin. |
| Weight | Very heavy. It’s real timber. | Light (because it’s mostly air and glue). |
| Value | High resale value. A proper heirloom. | Zero resale value. |
Common Questions I Get Asked
Will it match my other furniture? Probably not perfectly. It’s natural wood. The colour changes slightly depending on the light and the tree it came from. But that’s why it looks good. Mixing tones is better than having a room that looks like a showroom set.
Does it come in a box for me to build? No. I hate flat-pack as much as you do. These come pre-assembled. All you have to do is get it through the door.
Is 150cm too big for a hallway? Measure it. Then measure it again. Don’t forget to check if you can still open your front door properly. If 150cm is too tight, look at our Small Oak Sideboards.
What happens if I scratch the top? You can sand it. That’s the beauty of solid timber. You can’t do that with a cheap laminate. If you’re handy with a bit of sandpaper and some oil, you can make it look new again in twenty minutes.
Why is it more expensive than the ones on the high street? Because I’m not selling you sawdust held together with hope. You’re paying for the timber and the fact that you won’t have to replace it in three years.
