Real Talk About Mexican Pine Sideboards: Why They Aren’t Just For Show
I have spent more time in workshops than I care to admit. Over twenty years of smelling sawdust and dealing with hinges that don’t quite line up. People come into the showroom asking for something that looks like it belongs in a glossy magazine, but then they remember they have three kids and a dog that treats the furniture like a chew toy. That is where a Mexican Pine Sideboard comes in. It is not delicate. It is not precious. It is a bit of a beast, honestly.

Look, if you are after something that stays pristine and clinical, buy something plastic. This is wood. Specifically, it is Mexican Pine. It is a softer wood than oak, which means it is going to pick up a few knocks over the years. I call that character. My own Sideboards at home are covered in little dents from where my son decided his toy trucks needed a parking garage. You just rub a bit of wax on it and move on with your life.
The whole corona furniture look is everywhere for a reason. It has those black metal studs and the rough-sawn finish that hides a multitude of sins. It is proper solid stuff. You get these massive drawers that actually hold things—bits and bobs, the “good” cutlery you never use, or a mountain of chargers. It is practical. I am a big fan of things that actually do their job without making a fuss.
One thing I will say—it is heavy. Do not try to move it on your own unless you want to see your chiropractor. But that weight means it is not going to tip over when the kids start climbing it. I have seen plenty of cheap flat-pack stuff collapse under half the pressure. This is a “buy it once” sort of purchase. You might want to check out my Buying an Oak Sideboard: Shopping Guide even if you are leaning towards pine, just to understand what you are getting into regarding quality.
Maintenance is simple. Don’t overthink it. A bit of polish or some Oak Sideboard Care: Protecting Your Investment tips will keep it from drying out. Pine likes a bit of humidity, so don’t stick it right next to a roaring radiator if you can help it. It might groan a bit as the wood moves—that is just the material breathing.
If you are looking to kit out the rest of the house, I usually tell people to stick to the same vibe. Maybe look at Bedroom Furniture or some Kitchen Furniture in a similar wax finish. It keeps the house from looking like a jumble sale. Oak Castle Furniture builds these things to last, which is more than I can say for most things these days.
“Solid bit of kit. It’s heavy as anything and the drawers actually fit a decent amount of junk. Much better than the flimsy stuff I saw at the big retailers. Proper chuffed with it.”

Common Questions I Get Asked
Does it come flat-packed? Most of the ones we do at Oak Castle Furniture are pre-assembled because I don’t trust people with an Allen key. Check the listing, but usually, it’s ready to go.
Will the colour change over time? Yes. Pine mellows. It gets a bit darker and richer. If you leave it in direct sunlight, it happens faster. It’s a natural product, not a photograph.
Is it easy to clean? Don’t use those spray-on supermarket cleaners. They’re full of silicone and nasty stuff. Use a damp cloth and a bit of decent furniture wax. Sorted.
Are the drawers on runners? Usually, these are traditional wood-on-wood. They might stick a bit if it’s very humid. Rub a bit of candle wax on the bottom of the drawer. Problem solved.
Can I paint it? You can, but I wouldn’t. The wax finish is hard to paint over unless you sand it right back. If you want a White Sideboard, just buy one that’s already painted.
