Why Dining Tables Are Well Important
Your dining table isnt just a bit of furniture—its like the main part of your house! Its where everyone sits to eat their tea and have a proper chat. Whether the other half made a fancy dinner or your just having cereal, the dining table is where everyone gets together.
Think about all the stuff that happens on a dining table: Christmas dinner, birthdays, when your mates come round, and when you have to do your homework. Its not just some table, its where all the good stuff happens! My other half says the right table makes the whole house feel more homey.
What Makes a Dining Table Proper Good
The best dining tables are the ones that dont look cheap and nasty. You want one thats made really well, with good materials like proper oak or walnut, not that fake wood rubbish that peels off after a few months.
When I was looking for tables, I told the other half to check if they were wobbly or if the wood looked thin. A good table should be solid and heavy and not make weird creaking noises when you lean on it. It needs to handle everything from art projects to when someone drops their phone on it!
How to Get the Right Size That Fits Your Room
Getting a table that fits your room proper is dead important. You need to measure your dining room and leave about 90cm around the table so you dont have to breathe in to get to your chair. Think about how many people live in your house—if theres loads of you, you might need an 8 seater table, but if its just you and your other half maybe a smaller one is better.
My other half wanted this massive table but I measured the room and was like “no way thats fitting in here!” You gotta think about how many people actually eat at your house most days, not just when the whole family comes round once a year!
What Materials Are Best For Not Getting Ruined
The stuff your table is made from is well important. Wood tables are mint and look proper posh, especially oak ones. They last for basically forever and look even better when they get old.
You can get marble ones if your feeling fancy, or glass ones if you want something more modern. But glass shows EVERY fingerprint which drives the other half mental! Each material has good bits and bad bits. Wood is warm and nice but can get scratched, marble looks well posh but costs loads, and glass looks cool but you have to clean it like a million times a day.
How to Match Your Table With the Rest of Your Stuff
Your dining table should match all your other furniture or it looks weird. You don’t want some super modern glass table if all your other stuff looks old fashioned, or a massive dark wood thing if your house is all light and airy.
My other half likes those Monza ones that kind of go with everything. Think about the style of your house—if you’ve got an open plan kitchen you need a different table than if you’ve got a separate dining room. the other half says the table should be the statement piece but I reckon it should just go with everything else.
Extendable Tables For When Loads of People Come Round
Extendable dining tables are proper clever! They can be small for when its just your family having breakfast but then get bigger when your nan and grandad come round for Sunday roast.
Their perfect if you dont have a massive house or if you sometimes have loads of people over. I told the other half we should get one coz our dining room isnt massive but sometimes all my cousins come over and we need room for everyone. You just need to make sure the extending bit isnt too complicated or the other half will get in a right strop trying to make it work!
Picking Chairs That Dont Hurt Your Bum
Getting good dining chairs is just as important as the table! You need chairs that are comfy enough to sit on for ages when your having a big dinner or doing your homework.
Make sure you actually sit on chairs before you buy them! My other half picked these dead fancy ones but they hurt your back after like 10 minutes. The chairs should look nice with your table but also be comfy and not too hard to clean, especially if you’ve got little brothers or sisters who spill everything!
How to Stop Your Table Looking Manky
Looking after your table proper is dead important if you want it to stay nice. Different tables need different cleaning stuff. Wood tables need polish and you shouldnt put hot plates straight on them or they get rings. Glass tables need special cleaner or they look all streaky.
I told the other half we need them table mat things and coasters so the table doesnt get ruined. If you clean up spills straight away and dont let people put hot stuff directly on the table, it’ll stay looking mint for ages. My other half is well strict about using coasters but its worth it coz our table still looks new.
How Much to Spend Without Being Skint
Its tempting to buy the cheapest table but thats a proper false economy! Cheap tables break really quick and then you have to buy another one, which costs more in the end.
Think about how long a good table lasts. If you spend a bit more on a quality one, itll last for donkeys years. I said to the other half that we should get the best one we can afford coz we use it literally every day. No point saving fifty quid if the table looks naff after a year!
Main Things to Remember
- Get a table that looks good AND is strong enough to last
- Make sure it actually fits in your room
- Buy one made from good stuff that wont fall apart
- Think about getting one that can get bigger when you need it to
- Get comfy chairs or no one will want to sit at your table
- Look after it proper so it stays nice
- Dont just get the cheapest one, get the best one you can afford
- Take your time choosing and dont rush it
With a really good dining table, your house will feel proper homey and youll have somewhere nice for everyone to sit and eat together instead of on their laps in front of the telly!
