Sizing up a 65 inch tv stand: What actually works in a real living room

I’ve spent twenty years in the workshop and if I see one more person try to balance a massive telly on a flimsy bit of MDF, I’ll pack it in. You spend all that money on a 4K screen just to watch it wobble every time the kids have a scrap in the living room. It’s a bit daft. Look, if you’ve gone and bought a big screen, you need a 65 inch tv stand that isn’t going to buckle under the pressure.

Most people get the measurements wrong. They see a 140cm unit and think it’s enough because the screen says 65 inches. It isn’t. Not if you want it to look right. A 65-inch screen is usually about 145cm wide. If you put that on a 140cm stand, it’s going to hang off the sides. It looks messy and it’s a nightmare if someone brushes past it. You want something wider, maybe 160cm or more, so you’ve got space for your bits and bobs on the ends.

At Oak Castle Furniture, I tell people to go for a Solid Wood TV Unit because it actually stays where you put it. This is wood. It’s heavy. It will scratch if you’re not careful, but at least you can sand it down and start again. You can’t do that with plastic. If you’re worried about the height of your setup, you might want to read my thoughts on Extra Tall TV Cabinets: Are They the Best Choice? before you commit.

I’ve seen plenty of “contemporary” designs that look nice in a catalogue but couldn’t hold a bag of sugar without bowing. If you want something kid-proof, buy proper Oak Living Room Furniture. My own kids have given our furniture a right battering over the years, but a bit of Osmo Oil usually gets it sorted.

When you’re looking at a TV Unit, measure the feet of the telly, not just the screen. Some of these new TVs have legs right at the edges. If your 65 inch tv stand is too narrow, the legs will literally fall off the sides. Don’t be that person. Measure twice, buy once, and get it delivered properly so you don’t break your back trying to move it.

“Finally found a stand that doesn’t feel like it’s going to collapse under my new Sony. It’s proper solid oak and took two of us to move, but I’m chuffed with how it looks. No more wobbles when the dog runs past.”

Common questions about big TV stands

How wide should a 65 inch tv stand actually be? Ideally, you want at least 160cm. A 65-inch TV is about 145cm wide. If you use a 140cm stand, the screen hangs over the edges and looks a bit silly.

Will solid oak hold the weight of a large TV? Yes, easily. It’s what it’s made for. Unlike the cheap stuff, oak won’t bow or sag in the middle after six months of holding up a heavy screen.

Does it come with holes for all the messy cables? I make sure there are decent-sized cutouts in the back. Nobody wants to see a bird’s nest of wires hanging out the back of a nice piece of furniture.

Is it okay if my TV is slightly wider than the stand? You can do it, but I wouldn’t. It’s a safety risk if someone knocks it, and it visually unbalances the room. Better to have a bit of a border around the screen.

How do I look after the wood? Just a bit of clear oil once or twice a year keeps it from drying out. If the kids scratch it with a toy car, you can just sand that bit down and re-oil it. Sorted.
