I like working with oak because it does not pretend to be something else. The grain has a bit of character and the honey-coloured tone hides a multitude of sins. If you get a little scratch on it, it just blends in. You can’t say that about high-gloss rubbish. People worry about maintenance, but it is simple. Get some Osmo Oil or a bit of decent wax. Will it stain if I spill red wine? If you leave it there overnight? Yes. If you wipe it up like a normal person? No. The finish we use is pretty robust, but wood is porous. Use a coaster if you’re worried, but don’t lose sleep over it.

Is it hard to put together? Most of our Dinning Tables come with the tops finished. You just need to bolt the legs on. It’s a ten-minute job, but as I said, it’s heavy. Don’t drop it on your toes.

Why shouldn’t I just buy a cheaper pine table? You can if you want. But pine is soft. In six months, your light oak dining table will still look like a table, while a pine one will look like a topographical map of every homework session and dinner ever had.

Does the colour change over time? Aye, it mellows. Sunlight will deepen the tone slightly over the years. It’s a natural product. If you want something that stays exactly the same colour forever, buy a grey plastic garden table.

Can I put a hot pan on it? No. Don’t be daft. It’s wood, not a granite worktop. Use a mat.
