Why solid oak matters for a real family dining room
I’ve spent half my life in workshops covered in sawdust and I’m going to be honest with you. Most of what passes for a dining table these days is rubbish. It’s usually some thin bit of veneer stuck over compressed cardboard that’ll fall apart the second a kid spills a glass of squash. If you want something that stays looking brand new forever, go buy a plastic one. But if you want a proper bit of oak furniture that actually handles life, listen up.
Large extending dining table 6-8 Seater
This solid oak dining table is what I’d call a beast. It’s heavy. You’ll need two people to move it and you’ll probably have a bit of a moan about the weight when it arrives. That’s because it is solid oak. No hollow bits. No shortcuts. When you sit down for family meals, it doesn’t wobble. It’s got that natural beauty and warmth and character that you just don’t get with factory-line stuff.
Solid Oak Dining with a rustic solid finish
People ask me about the rustic oak finish. It’s meant to look lived-in. It’s got the natural grain, the knots, and the little imperfections that give it character to your dining space. If the kids do their homework at one end and catch it with a pen, or if someone knocks it with a chair, it just blends in. It’s rustic solid kit. It’s “buy it once” furniture for people who are tired of replacing things every two years.
Leaf Design extending and wooden extendable dining table
We do these in a few styles because everyone’s house is different. Sometimes you want a round extending dining table for a smaller spot, or maybe a round or rectangular setup depending on your room furniture layout. This specific one is a 140cm rectangular design that can extend when you’ve got a gathering. It’s a 4-6 seater normally, but it becomes a 6-8 seater once you use the butterfly extending leaf.
I’ve seen plenty of extending dining tables where the mechanism jams or you have to hide the extra planks under the sofa. This one has an extending feature built right in. You pull the tabletop apart, flip the leaf out from the centre, and you’re sorted. No rummaging in the garage. It’s a large extending dining table when you need it for dinner parties and a cosy spot for two when you don’t.
Oak Extending Dining
If you’re looking for small extendable dining tables or even a round extending pedestal for an intimate atmosphere, we’ve got those in the furniture collection too. Some people prefer the cross leg look or a traditional pedestal base. We even have painted finishes if you want a bit of elegance mixed with the oak finishes.
The point is, this extendable dining table is built to last. Whether it’s an oval extending shape or a round drop leaf dining table, the craft is the same. It’s solid wood. No veneer. Just proper oak. It gives you that additional space and extra room without the headache of cheap imports.
Before you buy, make sure you know how to look after it. I wrote a bit about Oak Sideboard Care: Protecting Your Investment which applies to tables too.
“Proper bit of kit. It’s heavy as anything so make sure you’ve got someone to help you move it, but it doesn’t budge when the family is over. The extension is easy enough to use and it looks like it’ll survive the grandkids.”

Common Questions About Our Oak Tables
How do I keep it looking decent? It’s not rocket science. Wipe it with a damp cloth if you spill something. Once or twice a year, give it a bit of clear wax or Osmo oil. This stops the wood from drying out if you’ve got the radiators on full blast.
Where do I put the extra leaf when I’m not using it? You don’t have to put it anywhere. It’s a butterfly mechanism, so it folds in half and hides inside the frame of the table. It’s much better than having to find space in a cupboard for it.
Is it actually solid wood? Yes. I wouldn’t sell it if it wasn’t. It’s solid oak through and through. That’s why it’s so heavy and why it won’t fall apart when you move house.
Will it fit through my front door? The legs come off for delivery. As long as your door is wider than the tabletop is thick (about 20cm in the box), the drivers will get it in. You just bolt the legs on once it’s in the room.
What happens if I scratch it? The beauty of solid oak is that you can actually fix it. If you get a deep scratch, you can lightly sand it back and re-wax it. You try doing that with a cheap flat-pack table and you’ll just go straight through to the cardboard.
