It is not fancy. It is not trying to be something it isn’t. It is Mexican Pine with those chunky black metal studs and a waxed finish that actually smells like wood, not a chemical factory. Is it heavy? Yes. If you are trying to lug a corona wardrobe up a narrow set of stairs in a terrace house, you are going to have a bad time. You will sweat, you might even swear a bit. But once it is in place, it stays put. It is kid-proof, too. My lot have bashed toys into our corona drawer chest for years, and it just adds to the character. Try doing that with a bit of flat-pack cardboard from a big-box retailer and see how far you get.

If you are the type who wants everything to look clinical and perfect, this probably isn’t for you. Wood moves. It has knots. It has a grain that tells you it was once a tree. I have seen plenty of people try to save a few quid on cheap Bedroom Furniture only to be back in my shop two years later because the drawer bottoms have fallen out. Common questions I get asked

Is the wood going to change colour? Yes. It is a natural product. Over time, sunlight will darken it slightly. It is called a patina. If you want something that stays exactly the same forever, buy plastic.

Does it come in one piece? The bigger bits, like Wardrobes, usually need assembling because you’d never get them through a standard British doorway otherwise. Most Chest of Drawers come ready to go.

How do I stop it from scratching? You don’t. It’s a bedroom, things happen. But because it is solid wood, you can actually sand out a deep scratch and re-wax it. You can’t do that with a laminate finish.

Will the drawers stick? Pine can swell a tiny bit if your house is very damp, but these are built with enough clearance that it shouldn’t be an issue. A bit of candle wax on the runners works wonders if they ever feel stiff.
