Why a Rustic Oak Sideboard is the only bit of furniture you will actually keep
I have spent the better part of twenty years in and out of workshops, and I am telling you now, most modern furniture is absolute rubbish. It is all glue, sawdust, and hope. If you want something that survives a house move, a couple of rowdy kids, and the inevitable dog bumping into it, you buy Solid Oak. It is heavy. Really heavy. Don’t try moving it on your own unless you fancy a trip to the osteopath, but that is the point. It is a proper bit of kit.

People often come into the showroom and ask if the knots and grain patterns are defects. No. They are the whole reason you buy a Rustic Oak Sideboard in the first place. This stuff is meant to look like it has lived a bit. It has got character that you just do not get with factory-line bits and bobs. Every piece of Rustic Oak Furniture tells a bit of a story through its grain. If you want something that looks like it was printed out by a computer, buy plastic. This is wood. It is slightly messy, it is unique, and it is honest.
I usually tell people to stick these in the hallway or the dining room. In the hall, an Oak Sideboard is a lifesaver for hiding the mountain of shoes and mail that usually litters the floor. If you are struggling with where to put it, have a look at my advice on Choosing the Perfect Oak Sideboard for Your Entryway. In the dining room, it is just a solid place to shove the “good” plates that only come out at Christmas. Plus, the top is wide enough to handle a massive Sunday roast without bowing in the middle.
One thing you need to realise is that oak is a natural material. It breathes. It will scratch if you are careless, but unlike the cheap stuff, you can actually fix it. A bit of wax and some elbow grease usually sorts most things out. If you are worried about the upkeep, I have written a bit more about Oak Sideboard Care so you do not ruin it in the first week.
We have got a fair few styles in the collection, from the chunky barn-style doors to things that look a bit more refined. Most of these Sideboards come with a mix of drawers and cupboards, which is handy for keeping the clutter out of sight. Whether you are in a terrace house or a country cottage, it fits. It is not about being trendy. Trends change every six months and usually involve a lot of grey paint. This is about buying it once and never having to think about it again.

“Finally, a piece of furniture that doesn’t wobble when the kids run past it. It took two of us to get it into the lounge, but it’s not going anywhere. Proper solid wood and the rustic finish looks much better in person than in the photos.”

Common Questions
Does it need a lot of oiling? Not really. A bit of wax every six months keeps it happy. Don’t overthink it, just don’t let it bone dry out near a radiator.
Why is it so heavy? Because it is solid timber. There are no hollow bits or cardboard fillers. That weight is what stops it from wobbling when you load it up with heavy plates.
Will the colour change over time? Oak naturally mellows. It might get a bit deeper in tone as the years go by, especially if it is in direct sunlight. Most people think it looks better with age.
Can I put a large TV on it? Yes. Unlike the flimsy units you find elsewhere, this won’t sag. It is more than strong enough to act as a TV Unit.
What happens if I spill a drink on it? Wipe it up straight away. Oak is tough, but standing water will leave a mark if you leave it overnight. Use a coaster; it isn’t hard.
