Why an 80cm Sideboard is the Only Sensible Choice for a Tight Hallway

Look, I have spent twenty years in and out of workshops, and I have seen people try to cram massive dressers into narrow hallways. It never works. You end up bruised and the wall ends up scuffed. That is why an 80cm wide sideboard exists. It is for the real world where houses are not as big as they look on the estate agent’s photos.

Most of what we sell at Oak Castle Furniture is built to last longer than your mortgage. If you want something that will survive a house move or a toddler with a plastic hammer, you want Solid Oak. If you want something that looks like it belongs in a showroom but falls apart the second you put a heavy stack of plates in it, go to a big-box retailer. I do not do flimsy.

One thing you need to know: the width we list is the top. The actual body is a bit narrower. Why? Because houses have skirting boards. We have made the body slim enough so the unit sits flush against the wall. It is a small detail, but it stops the unit from wobbling and prevents your keys from falling down the back into the abyss.

Sometimes people ask me if they should go for a 90cm wide sideboard instead. Honestly? If you have the extra ten centimetres, go for it. But most people do not. They have a radiator in the way or a door that needs to swing open.

Let’s talk about the Sideboards we have got in the shop.

First up is the light oak sideboard. It is a traditional bit of kit. Two doors, one shelf. It is heavy—about 32kg—so do not try to be a hero when the delivery driver arrives. Get someone to help you move it. It is ready-assembled because I do not believe in making customers spend their Saturday afternoon swearing at an Allen key.

Then there is the version with drawers. Good for bits and bobs. If you are putting this in the dining room, it is sorted for cutlery. If it is for the hallway, it is for all those random batteries and old receipts you are afraid to throw away. I also stock some gloss stuff with LEDs. Not my personal cup of tea—I am a wood man—but the kids seem to like them. Just be warned: black gloss shows every single fingerprint. You will be wiping it down every five minutes if you have sticky-handed children around. It is a pain to keep clean, but it looks modern, I suppose.

I have also got a wine rack version. It holds 12 bottles. If you are the type who likes a drink after a long day in the workshop, it is a solid choice. It is built like a tank and keeps your glassware out of the way.

Maintenance is not hard, but do not ignore it. Stick some wax on the oak once in a while. If you want the full lowdown, read Oak Sideboard Care: Protecting Your Investment. It will save you a headache later. Plus, if you buy one now, you can Earn 10% of Your Purchase Back in Reward Points to use on something else later. Not a bad deal.

Common Questions I Get Asked

How do I get this up the stairs? You don’t do it alone. These are solid units, not flat-packs. Get a mate to help. If you’re worried about the space, measure the turn in your staircase twice before you order.

Will it match my other furniture? Oak varies. That’s the point of wood. If you want everything to be the exact same shade of beige, buy plastic. Our light oak is natural and warm, but every tree is different.

Can I put a TV on it? Yes, if it fits. An 80cm unit is fine for a 40-inch screen. Just don’t put a massive 75-inch beast on there or it’ll look ridiculous and probably tip over if the cat jumps on it.

Does it come with a warranty? I give a 5-year structural guarantee. If the joints fail or the wood splits because of how it was made, I’ll fix it. I won’t fix it if you’ve left it next to a roaring radiator for three years, though.

Is it actually solid wood? The oak ones are. No fake finishes. The gloss ones are MDF because you can’t get that finish on natural timber. I’m honest about what’s what.

“Proper solid bit of kit. I was fed up with furniture that wobbles when you walk past it. This 80cm unit fits perfectly in our narrow Victorian hallway and the kids haven’t managed to dent it yet. Cheers.”
