Sizing up your 50 inch tv stand without making a mess of it
Look, I spend most of my life in a workshop covered in sawdust, so I am not here to give you a glossy sales pitch. If you want something that looks like it came out of a futuristic spaceship, you are in the wrong place. I work with oak, and oak is stubborn, heavy, and honest. If you have just spent a week’s wages on a new screen, don’t be a tight-arse when it comes to what it sits on. A 50 inch tv stand needs to do its job, which is holding a massive weight without bowing in the middle like a cheap shelf.

I have seen people try to save a few quid by buying a tiny TV Unit that is barely the width of the screen. It looks like a bodge job. For a 50-inch telly, you need a unit that is at least 110cm wide. Anything less and the legs of the TV might actually hang off the edge, which is a great way to end up with a smashed screen and a very bad mood. Even if the legs fit, a unit that is too narrow makes the whole room look top-heavy. It is common sense, really. Measure the distance between the TV legs before you even think about clicking buy. If it is close to 110cm, just go the next size up. It is better to have a bit of breathing room for your bits and bobs than to have a screen overhanging the sides by a few centimetres.
This is a Solid Wood TV Unit, not some hollow flat-pack nonsense. That means it is going to be heavy. Proper heavy. Do not try to move it on your own unless you want to spend the weekend at the physio. It will probably scratch if you drag a ceramic pot across it, too. It is wood, not plastic. If you want something that stays looking brand new forever, go buy some laminate. But if you want something that will still be standing when your kids have moved out, then Oak Castle Furniture is what you are looking for.
If you are worried about where the TV sits in relation to your sofa, you might want to read my thoughts on Extra Tall TV Cabinets: Are They the Best Choice? because getting the height wrong is a literal pain in the neck. Most people forget that. They focus on the width and forget they will be staring up at the ceiling for three hours every night.
“Took two of us to get it into the lounge because it’s solid as a rock, but the 50 inch tv stand fits the telly like a glove. No wobbles, just proper furniture.”

Common questions about 50-inch units
Can I use a smaller stand if the TV legs are central? You could, but it looks rubbish. The screen will overhang the sides and it makes the whole setup look unbalanced. Stick to at least 110cm.
Does it come in a box for me to build? No. Most of our stuff is pre-assembled. I have done the hard work for you. You just need to get it through the door, which is the hard part because it is solid.
Will the wood change colour over time? Yes. It is a natural product. Sunlight will mellow the oak. If you want something that never changes, buy a grey plastic unit.
Is it safe for a house with toddlers? It is heavy enough that they won’t knock it over easily, but I always tell people to use a wall strap. Better safe than sorry when it comes to kids and big screens.
How do I get rid of dust in the grain? Just use a slightly damp cloth. Do not go dousing it in those supermarket sprays full of silicone. You will ruin the finish I spent hours on.
