How to convert furniture dimensions (W × D × H)
When measuring furniture for British homes, keep each dimension distinct. Furniture listings in the UK are typically presented in centimetres, while floorplans, alcoves, and older tape measures often use feet and inches.
- Centimetres to inches: Divide centimetres by 2.54 (e.g. 100 cm ÷ 2.54 = 39.37 in).
- Inches to centimetres: Multiply inches by 2.54 (e.g. 36 in × 2.54 = 91.44 cm).
- Centimetres to millimetres: Multiply centimetres by 10 (e.g. 4 cm thickness = 40 mm).
- Millimetres to inches: Divide millimetres by 25.4 (e.g. 750 mm ÷ 25.4 = 29.53 in).
Worked Example: A medium small oak sideboard measuring 100 cm (W) × 45 cm (D) × 85 cm (H) converts to:
- Width: 100 cm ÷ 2.54 = 39.37 inches (approx. 3 ft 3⅜ in)
- Depth: 45 cm ÷ 2.54 = 17.72 inches (approx. 1 ft 5¾ in)
- Height: 85 cm ÷ 2.54 = 33.46 inches (approx. 2 ft 9½ in)

Converting feet and inches to metric
When working with imperial dimensions given in feet and inches (e.g. 5 ft 6 in), convert the feet into total inches before converting to metric:
- Multiply feet by 12 to find inches (e.g. 5 ft × 12 = 60 inches).
- Add the remaining inches (e.g. 60 + 6 = 66 total inches).
- Multiply by 2.54 to obtain centimetres (66 in × 2.54 = 167.64 cm).
Note on decimal inches: Be careful not to confuse decimal inches with feet. 17.75 inches is seventeen and three-quarter inches—not seventeen feet.
Critical clearance checks before ordering
Converting dimensions ensures an accurate tape measure reading, but fitting furniture into UK properties requires factoring in spatial clearances:
- Skirting board offsets: Measure floor-level wall width between skirting boards, not just wall-to-wall plaster. Skirting boards typically reduce alcove width by 30 to 50 mm.
- Door swing & drawer extension: Ensure at least 60 to 75 cm of unobstructed space in front of cupboards and drawers so doors can swing fully open without hitting sofas or doorframes.
- Dining room chair push-back: Around solid oak dining tables, allow a minimum of 90 cm (35.4 in) between the tabletop edge and walls so seated diners can push back comfortably.
- Delivery access route: Compare packaged furniture dimensions against your property’s narrowest access point (front door opening, stairwell turns, and hallway radiators). For detailed measurement protocols, read our guide on how to measure your room for the perfect furniture fit.
