Buy furniture with confidence by checking the exact product, the complete cost and the terms before you pay. Keep written answers to questions that affect your decision. A high price, a long warranty or a polished photograph is not a substitute for information about the item and the service you will receive.

Browse our living room furniture range to build a shortlist, then compare individual listings. Resolve contradictions or missing details rather than assuming that a collection name establishes the same materials, finish or delivery for every piece.

Ten questions to ask before ordering

Question areaWhat to ask
Exact itemWhich model, size, finish and quantity am I ordering, and what is included?
MaterialsWhich materials are used in the visible surfaces, frame, back, shelves and drawer components?
Construction and featuresWhich joints, fixings, drawer mechanisms and adjustable features belong to this exact model?
Usable spaceWhat are the internal dimensions and access openings for the items I want to store?
Use and careWhat are the stated load limits, care instructions and any environmental or positioning requirements?
AssemblyDoes it arrive assembled, partly assembled or flat-packed, and what work or parts are required?
DeliveryWhat is the agreed date or timeframe, service level and access requirement, including packaged dimensions?
Total costWhat will I pay including delivery, assembly and any optional services?
Returns and faultsHow do I cancel if I change my mind, and how do I report damaged, faulty or misdescribed goods?
Warranty and supportWho provides the guarantee, what does it cover, what is excluded and how do I make a claim?

Ask for the answers in an email or another form you can retain. A missing technical detail is a reason to seek clarification, not automatic proof of poor quality or dishonesty. If the retailer needs to ask the maker, allow them to do so; if an essential question remains unresolved, pause the purchase.

Check claims without inventing quality thresholds

Terms such as “premium”, “handcrafted”, “solid wood” and “sustainably sourced” need context. Ask what the term means for the exact product and what evidence supports any certification or performance claim. Do not infer a required lifespan, manufacturing time or material-cost percentage from the retail price.

A quoted cycle test or load rating should identify what was tested and under which conditions. It is not automatically a prediction of the whole item’s life in your home. Nor does a particular paint coat count or joint type establish a universal quality standard.

For component materials and safe inspection questions, read our furniture materials and construction guide. This buying-confidence guide focuses on the purchase process rather than repeating material rankings.

Use reviews as supporting information

Look for reviews of the exact model and seller, with dates, ownership context and specific descriptions of delivery, product use and problem resolution. Notice how the retailer responds to issues, but do not treat one review as a diagnosis of a whole range.

Positive reviews do not prove fraud, and long-term praise does not guarantee your item’s lifespan. A new product may have few reviews. Use feedback to identify questions worth asking, alongside specifications and the terms for your own order.

Keep cancellation, faulty-goods rights and warranty separate

For UK consumer purchases, distinguish these three routes. The available remedy depends on the purchase, timing and circumstances; consult the linked official guidance rather than treating a shop policy as the whole of your protection.

RouteWhat to understand
Changing your mindFor many online, mail or phone purchases, you normally notify the seller within 14 days of receiving the goods, then have another 14 days to return them. Exceptions and return-cost conditions can apply, including for certain personalised or custom-made items.
Faulty or misdescribed goodsThese involve separate legal rights, potentially including a refund, repair or replacement. A store’s change-of-mind window does not by itself end those rights.
Warranty or guaranteeThis is additional protection under its own terms. Read the duration, exclusions, covered components, claim route and any transport costs; it does not replace your legal rights.

Read GOV.UK’s returns and refunds guidance and Citizens Advice’s warranty guidance. Citizens Advice offers links to advice for the different UK nations. Check the guidance relevant to your circumstances if a dispute arises.

Do not judge a retailer solely by whether a warranty lasts one year or five years, or assume ordinary wear and tear must be covered. Compare what the actual terms provide. A longer voluntary return period may be useful, but it is not a guarantee of product quality.

Confirm delivery and check the item safely

Agree the delivery timeframe and clarify what the service includes. Check packaged dimensions along the access route, and ask about carrying, assembly, unpacking or collection rather than assuming they are included. Resolve inconsistent delivery estimates before paying.

When the item arrives, check it as far as you can safely and record visible damage, missing parts or discrepancies. Follow assembly and positioning instructions. Report problems promptly to the seller with your order details and photographs; do not attempt repairs or continue unsafe use just to meet a reporting process.
