I’ve spent years in and out of workshops, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that people often get distracted by “trendy” woods. Don’t get me wrong, mango wood has its place—it’s got a funky grain and it’s usually a bit cheaper. But if you’re asking me what I’d put in my own living room to hold up a heavy telly and survive the kids’ football practice in the lounge? It’s oak every single time.
Oak is proper solid. It’s dense, it’s heavy, and it doesn’t give a toss about a bit of wear and tear. Mango wood is a bit more temperamental; it’s a fruit wood, so it can be prone to a bit of movement if your central heating is cranked up high. Plus, finding a TV stand for an 85-inch TV that won’t sag over time is much easier when you’re looking at solid European or American oak.
To be honest, mango wood can look a bit “busy.” The grain goes all over the shop. Oak has that classic, honey-toned warmth that just looks right in a British home. It’s a “buy it once” kind of wood. If you’re looking at extra tall TV cabinets, you want that structural integrity that only a slow-growing hardwood provides. It don’t matter much if you’re just after a temporary fix, but if you want something your grandkids might eventually fight over, stick with the oak.
Comparing the Two: At a Glance
| Feature | Solid Oak | Mango Wood |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | Extremely high; “kid-proof” and dense. | Moderate; softer and easier to dent. |
| Cost | Higher upfront, but better long-term value. | Generally cheaper for the initial buy. |
| Maintenance | Low; a bit of wax or oil once a year. | Moderate; can be sensitive to humidity. |
| Style | Classic, timeless, very British. | Eclectic, varied grain, often more “boho.” |
“I was worried about the weight of our new OLED screen, but this oak unit is sturdy as a rock. It survived my toddler ramming his toy car into it without a mark. Proper furniture!”— Verified Customer
Common Questions I Get Asked
Does oak furniture need a lot of looking after? Not really. Give it a bit of a dust and maybe a rub down with some good quality wax or Osmo oil every six months or so. It’s much less faff than people think.
Is it actually solid wood all the way through? Everything we talk about here at Oak Castle is solid. No cheap fillers. You can feel the weight of it the second you try to move it (which is why I recommend the White Glove delivery, to be fair).
Will the colour change over time? Oak mellows beautifully. It’ll deepen slightly in tone as it ages, which just adds to the character. It’s not like those cheap sets that just look tatty after a year.
Is oak too heavy for some floors? Unless you’re living in a literal house of cards, no. It’s heavy, sure, but it distributes the weight well. Just use some felt pads on the feet if you’ve got nice hardwood floors you want to protect.
Can I put a massive TV on a smaller oak unit? Physically, the oak will hold the weight, no problem. But for safety (and so it doesn’t look top-heavy), you want a unit that’s at least a few inches wider than the TV screen.
