Choose an oak console table by checking its depth first, then its width, height and storage. The right piece gives you somewhere useful for keys, post or a lamp without narrowing your walking route or catching a nearby door. A light, smoked or painted finish can then help it sit comfortably with the rest of your room.

Will a console table fit your hallway?

A table can fit against the wall and still be wrong for the hallway. Measure the space you actually walk through, including skirting boards, radiators and door handles. Depth is the distance the table projects into the room; width is its length along the wall.

  1. Measure the narrowest usable hallway width where the table will stand.
  2. Subtract the table depth and any gap needed behind it for skirting boards or plugs.
  3. Mark the full footprint on the floor with masking tape. Open nearby doors and walk past carrying the things you normally bring through, such as shopping bags.
  4. Check drawer-opening space separately: a drawer needs room beyond the closed table footprint.
  5. Measure the delivery route and compare it with the packaged dimensions, not just the finished table size.

For example, in a hallway with 120cm of usable width, a 32cm-deep table leaves 88cm before allowing for any gap behind it; a 40cm-deep table leaves 80cm. These are simple space calculations, not a guarantee of comfortable access. Test the remaining route against your household’s needs, especially if you use a pushchair or mobility aid.

Do not choose a wider table just to fill a wall. A shorter console that leaves a doorway clear is more useful than a statement piece that gets in the way. If the taped-out footprint still feels restrictive, leave the space clear rather than force a table into it.

Two oak console tables to compare

These two models show the difference between a shallower footprint and a deeper display surface. Dimensions are listed in width × depth × height order.

Console tableW × D × HUseful featuresMain trade-off
Light Oak Console Table85 × 32 × 75cmLight oak finish and a lower shelf for books or baskets. The shallower top takes less hallway space, but check the footprint of your lamp or other display items.
Smoked Oak Console Table90 × 40 × 78cmSolid oak and oak veneer construction, a smoked dark-brown finish and matt lacquer protection. Assembly required. The deeper top offers more display depth, but takes 8cm more space from the walking route.

Choose between them using your measured space rather than finish alone. Check the individual pages for current prices, availability and delivery information. For the Light Oak Console Table, confirm the construction, finish treatment and assembly requirements before ordering if those details are not clear in the listing.

Solid oak, veneer or painted: what are you buying?

“Oak” does not necessarily mean every component is solid oak. An oak console may combine solid timber with oak veneer, which is a thin layer of real oak over another material. Painted furniture can also use different materials for its top, frame and panels.

Ask which parts are solid oak, where veneer is used and what sits underneath it. This helps you understand the construction and choose suitable care products. Neither a painted finish nor veneer alone tells you whether a table is well made; clear material information and sound construction matter more than a broad label.

For colour, compare the finish with your flooring and nearby furniture in the same light. A light oak finish gives a different contrast from smoked oak, while a painted base can connect with existing painted furniture. Names such as “natural” and “light” are not a promise of an exact colour match between ranges.

Choose storage you will actually use

Drawers are useful for small items you want out of sight, but their internal measurements matter more than the table’s overall size. If you plan to store a particular organiser, measure it first and ask for the usable drawer width, depth and height.

A lower shelf works well for accessible storage, provided your basket fits between the legs and underneath the top. Check shelf depth and vertical clearance before buying baskets. Keep part of the tabletop free for everyday use; a tray for keys and one lamp may be more practical than a crowded display.

Using a console behind a sofa or as a dressing table

Behind a sofa, a tabletop around or below the sofa-back height is a useful visual starting point, not a universal fit rule. Measure the back of your own sofa, leave room for reclining mechanisms and keep lamp leads out of the walking route. A console behind the sofa is not necessarily within easy reach for drinks.

For seated use, do not rely on overall table height. Measure floor-to-underside clearance beneath any drawer or apron—the rail below the top—along with the gap between the legs and the space available for knees and a chair. A console that works for display may be uncomfortable as a desk or dressing table. Check these measurements before pairing a console with a chair or stool.

Care depends on the finish

Start with the care instructions for the exact model. Dust with a soft cloth, protect the surface beneath drinks and plant pots, and deal with spills promptly using the recommended cleaning method. If a damp cloth is permitted, dry the surface afterwards.

The Smoked Oak Console Table has a matt lacquered finish. Do not apply furniture oil or wax simply because the wood is oak; ask which products are suitable for that coating. For an oiled or waxed table, follow its own treatment instructions rather than using a universal maintenance schedule. Avoid sanding or using wire wool unless the manufacturer confirms it is appropriate for the finish and construction.

Before you place your order

  • Confirm the exact width, depth and height, plus any drawer or underside measurements you need.
  • Check whether the table requires assembly, what needs fitting and whether instructions are supplied. If different sections of a listing disagree, ask before ordering.
  • Check packaged dimensions, access through doorways and whether help will be needed to move the table.
  • Confirm the delivery service, current lead time and any postcode restrictions for the chosen item.
  • Read the returns and guarantee terms, including any charges and exclusions.
  • Follow the supplied positioning, load and wall-fixing instructions; do not assume a heavy table cannot tip.

Once you have tested the footprint and decided what storage you need, shop the console table range. Compare the measurements first, then choose the finish you prefer—and ask us about any missing specification before committing.
