Solid oak or a painted frame?
There’s a decision to make before you buy. You can go for fully natural oak throughout, or a painted frame with a solid oak top.
If you’re picturing something more traditional — the old-style oak bureau bookcase with a drop-down desk built in — that’s a specific, less common style, and it’s not really what we focus on anymore. Practical open shelving tends to serve people better day to day.
A grey painted frame with a waxed hardwood top gives you a clean look without darkening the room. Natural light oak throughout is the other option if you want to keep everything bright.
Either way, expect some wear. Real wood picks up minor scratches over time — kids throwing toys around, keys dropped on a shelf, that sort of thing. Most people call that character. If you want something that looks untouched forever, real wood isn’t really the right material for that.
Getting the size right
Don’t guess your room’s dimensions. Get the tape measure out and actually check the floor space — a surprising number of calls to the workshop are from people whose new bookcase blocks a radiator or sticks out past a doorway.
For a large book collection, something like our tall unit — 80cm wide, 180cm high — gives you serious vertical storage. It’s a big piece, so it’s worth checking ceiling height and doorway clearance before it arrives.
For tighter alcoves or smaller rooms, a compact light oak version works better — enough storage without dominating the space.
