Choose solid oak entertainment centres by checking the TV’s stand footprint and weight, your seated viewing position and the space needed by each device. An entertainment centre may be a low TV cabinet or a larger arrangement with shelving; compare the actual dimensions and construction rather than relying on the name.

Check TV support before screen size

A television’s advertised inches describe its screen diagonal, not the width or depth of its feet. Measure the complete stand footprint and check the TV’s weight with its stand attached. The feet or pedestal must sit fully on a suitable supporting surface, within the furniture’s stated top load limit and the TV manufacturer’s placement instructions.

Check separate shelf ratings for consoles, receivers and other equipment. Do not assume a whole-unit capacity applies to every shelf. A wider top can offer visual balance and space for accessories, but width or a solid-oak label alone does not establish safe support.

Plan the room and viewing height

Measure wall width, furniture depth and height, allowing for skirting boards, sockets, doors and walkways. Test the proposed screen position from your usual seat so you can watch without an uncomfortable upward gaze or twisted posture. There is no single cabinet height that suits every sofa and television.

Check that a soundbar will not obscure the picture or the TV’s remote-control sensor. If the TV is wall-mounted, its bracket, wall and fixings must support it independently; the cabinet below is not part of that support. Use competent installation help where needed.

Measure usable compartments, not just external dimensions. Include room for plugs, cable bends, access to controls and any permitted device orientation. Adjustable shelving can help with future changes, but it must still meet the relevant load and ventilation requirements.

Keep ventilation and cables clear

Follow each device manufacturer’s ventilation instructions. An open front or a cable hole does not automatically provide enough airflow. Avoid running equipment in a closed compartment unless its instructions permit that arrangement and the required ventilation is provided.

For example, PlayStation advises at least 10cm of free space around each side of a PS5 console, unobstructed side and rear vents, and avoiding narrow or cramped spaces. Treat this as guidance for that device, not a universal clearance for all equipment.

Route cables without trapping them behind the cabinet or pinching them in doors and drawers. Keep plugs accessible, avoid blocking ventilation openings and follow electrical equipment ratings. Do not cut a structural back panel or drill new routing holes without the furniture manufacturer’s approval.

Verify materials and installation

Ask which parts are solid oak and where oak veneer, other timber or engineered panels are used. Oak veneer is real oak on a supporting core; oak-effect finishes imitate the appearance. A solid oak frame does not mean every panel is solid oak, and mixed construction is not automatically poor quality.

Check joints, fittings and the stated loads. Follow the TV and furniture manufacturers’ anti-tip instructions, using restraints and fixings appropriate to the installation. Heavy furniture can still tip. Keep tempting items away from places that encourage children to climb, and never use the cabinet as a step or seat unless designed for that purpose.

Finish, care and ordering

Compare finish colour and sheen with the room, remembering that natural grain and colour vary. Rustic styling does not prove reclaimed timber or handmade production. Claims about responsible sourcing, lifespan or resale value need evidence; oak is not automatically a financial investment or the lowest-impact option.

Follow the care instructions for the actual coating. Dust gently, wipe spills promptly and dry after any permitted damp cleaning. Do not apply oil, wax or polish on a universal schedule. Identify the finish and component material before sanding or attempting repairs.

Confirm packaged dimensions, delivery access, assembly requirements, the complete price and current guarantee and return terms. Browse TV units or solid wood TV units, then verify the individual specification against your equipment.
