Why Side Tables Are Actually Class
So like, you might think a side table is just a boring bit of furniture, but it’s actually well important! You can get them in wood, metal and glass, and they look proper smart. When my other half was watching telly last night, she put her cup of tea on one and was like “This is so much better than balancing it on the sofa!” Plus they look way better than them cheap plastic ones from the pound shop.
The best ones are made really good, not like that rubbish one I built last summer that wobbled all over the place! The proper ones have got nice joints and smooth edges and stuff. When you put one next to your sofa, it makes the whole room look like someone who knows about design did it instead of just throwing furniture around.
Side Tables With Storage Are Well Clever
If your room is tiny like mine, you NEED a side table with drawers or shelves! Your not gonna believe how much stuff you can hide in them! My other half was well chuffed when I showed her how all her magazines and remotes could go in the drawers instead of being scattered all over. It’s like magic how they can look so tidy on the outside but be hiding all your junk!
These multi-tasker tables are brilliant for small flats or rooms where you cant fit loads of furniture. My mate got one for her bedroom and she keeps all her makeup and phone chargers in it. Dead practical, innit?
Lamp Tables vs Side Tables – What’s the Difference??
So apparantly lamp tables and side tables aren’t exactly the same thing? Bit confusing tbh. Lamp tables are made specially for putting lamps on (obvs) and are usually a bit bigger on top. I explained it when we was looking at furniture and I was like “what’s the point in having different names for basically the same thing???”
Side tables are more for putting whatever on – your drinks, phone, snacks, whatever. The height is super important tho – you want it to be about the same as your sofa arm so you don’t have to reach up or down loads when your grabbing your cuppa. I is well picky about getting the heights right in our house!
Round Side Tables Are Sick for Corners
OMG round side tables are THE BEST for them awkward corners where nothing else fits properly! They dont have them sharp edges that you bang your leg on when your running to answer the door. My other half put one in our weird corner and it looks well smart now instead of just being empty.
The curvy shape looks well nice when everything else is all square and boring. You can get them in all sorts of materials too – wood ones look proper traditional but the metal ones are more modern and that. Our living room used to look bare basic but now it’s got style and that.
What Side Tables Last the Longest?
If you want your table to last ages, you gotta get one made of decent stuff. The wooden ones are proper sturdy – like oak and walnut and that. I says the good wood ones actually look better when they get older which is mad cos most stuff looks worse!
Metal tables are well good too if you like that modern look. They dont scratch easy if you get the powder coated ones. Glass looks dead posh but my other half was worried about me breaking it (as if!) so we got one with a wooden frame and glass top as a compromise.
The best ones mix different materials together which looks dead sophisticated. My mate’s got one with metal legs and a wooden top and it looks like it should be in one of them posh furniture shops in London!
Where Should You Put Your Side Tables?
The obvious place is next to your sofa innit? Most people put one on each end which looks well balanced and means everyone can reach a table to put their stuff on. My other half is proper into making everything look symmetrical.
But you can put them other places too! Like next to your fave chair for when your chilling and reading or on your phone. In our house we’ve got one in the hallway for throwing keys and stuff on when we come in so they dont get lost. That was my idea and it actually works!
Just make sure you dont put them where people will keep bumping into them or you’ll end up with bruises all over your legs and drinks getting knocked over and that.
Side Tables Work In Other Rooms Too!
Side tables aren’t just for the living room you know! You can use them all over the house! My other half put one next to our bed instead of a normal bedside table and it looks well posher. They’re good for guest rooms too when you cant fit massive furniture in.
I put one next to his computer desk for putting snacks and drinks on while he’s gaming. And my other half has one in the dining room for when we have people round for dinner and need somewhere to put extra plates and stuff.
They’re proper versatile which means you can move them around when you get bored of your room layout. Our house is always changing cos my other half likes to move furniture around when she’s bored!
Side Tables vs End Tables – What’s the Difference??
This is another confusing furniture thing! Apparantly end tables are specifically for the ends of sofas but honestly they look exactly the same as side tables to me? I tries to explain the difference but I zoned out cos who actually cares what there called as long as they do the job??
The important thing is getting ones that are the right height and size for your sofa and room. Too big and they look weird, too small and there not very useful. It’s about getting the proportions right, not what there called!
How Side Tables Make Your Room Look Better
Side tables are like them little details that make your whole room look put together instead of just random furniture. You can use them to add different materials or colours without having to buy a massive expensive thing like a new sofa.
My other half says there like jewellery for your room! You can get dead unique ones that make your room look different from everyone elses. Myself found one at a car boot sale that was proper vintage and everyone comments on it when they come round.
They help tie everything together in your room by carrying the same colours or styles through the space. Interior designers use them all the time (I seen it on them home makeover shows) to make rooms look finished and fancy.
How to Make Your Side Table Look Instagram Worthy
The top of your side table is like a little stage where you can show off your cool stuff! My other half changes ours all the time – sometimes she puts a lamp and some books, sometimes candles or plants or whatever. It’s like a mini display area!
You can change it up for different seasons too – put christmassy stuff at christmas, flowers in spring, and that. It’s way cheaper than redecorating your whole room but makes everything look fresh.
Just dont put too much stuff on or it starts looking well messy. And make sure you can still actually use the table – what’s the point of having a nice table if you cant put your cuppa on it cos its covered in ornaments??
Main Things to Think About When Getting Side Tables:
- Get ones made of good stuff that wont fall apart after 5 minutes
- Make sure the height is right for your sofa or chair
- Think about if you need storage in them for your stuff
- Round ones are good for small spaces and not banging your legs
- They can move to different rooms when you want a change
- The shape and style should match your other furniture a bit
- Good ones will last ages so it’s worth getting decent ones
- You can get multiple ones to put around your room
- They make good presents too! (hint hint to myself and my other half if your reading this!)
Side tables are like the unsung heroes of the living room! Everyone notices the massive sofa but the side tables are what makes it all work properly! My other half says its the little touches that make a house feel like a home and I reckon she’s right for once! 😂
